Respiratory protective equipment is the last line of defence against a workplace airborne pollutant (eg gas, fibre, dust, mist or vapour), but is also often the only real protection available.

The effectiveness of the device is however strongly  dependent upon how well it is worn and maintained.  The face-fit test demonstrates whether the item will protect the user, but also acts as a useful training exercise for the user, demonstrating both the limitations and usefulness of the device.
